unspoilt caribbean holiday accommodation las galeras information
The Samana peninsula, where the town of Las Galeras is located, is a strip of land with a long history. In the late 1600s, the area was home to pirates and in the 1800s became a haven for African-American freemen. Now, almost 200 years later, it is a destination for visitors to the Dominican Republic who want to escape the all-inclusive resorts found in the DR's popular resort towns.

Things to do

In addition to Casa Dorado's Sport Fishing and Snorkeling excursions, Las Galeras boasts nine area beaches including Playa Fronton, La Playita, Playa Rincon and Playa Madama. Rock climbing and camping are popular in Playa Fronton. La Playita, a short walk from the Casa Dorado's Guest House, has one of the prettiest snorkeling reefs in the area. Snorkeling equipment is included in your stay.

Other excursions include four-wheeler tours to Rincon and horseback riding to Playa Fronton and El Limon Waterfall.  The trip to Rincon offers sweeping views of the entire eastern end of the Samana peninsula. A short drive from Las Galeras is the El Limon Waterfall. Guides will lead you on foot or horseback to this remote, 200 meter high waterfall where you can swim in the natural pool under the falls.

The village has several restaurants, serving French, Italian and local Dominican specialties, and three nightclubs where you can practice your salsa and bachata moves.

Directions from Las Americas Airport, Santo Domingo to Casa Dorado

The trip takes 3 hours and you need about 400 pesos for the three tolls.

Follow the exit route from the Las Americas Airport north to the main highway.  Head west toward Santo Domingo. There is an elevated ramp on the left hand side that takes you to the westbound side of the highway.  Soon after you will pass through a toll. You don’t pay the toll this direction(only as you leave the capital).  Immediately after passing through the toll there is a right-hand exit for the local access road running parallel to the highway.  Be aware, there is a sign for the Samana Highway, but it is small.  About 1 km on the access road merge north-bound on to the Samana highway.  It is clearly marked.

There are 3 tolls on the Samana Highway totaling about 400 pesos, so you need to have Dominican money with you.  Follow the new highway all the way to until it dead ends into Route 5(near Nagua). Turn right on to Route 5 and head east toward the town of Samana.  You will pass the El Catey Airport soon after turning on to Route 5.

Pass through Sanchez and continue to the town Samana.  There will be signs for a left turn to Las Terrenas/El Portillo, do not take it, continue straight.

As you drive through Samana, follow the main traffic route down to the water.  The road merges left along the waterfront. You will see new “gingerbread shoppies” on the left.  At the end of the waterfront, turn left and continue up the hill.  It is a long, steep hill.  At the top of the hill there will be a juncture, turn right.  Continue along this road for 18 miles.  The road is newly paved and in excellent condition.

As you enter Las Galeras, the public school is  on the right, then a baseball/soccer field on the left.  100 meters further there is a corner with a Pentecostal Chruc h(Iglesia de la Profecia) and a bright yellow ferrteria(hardware store).  Turn left here.  Continue to the third left hand turn.  Turn left and Casa Dorado is the first house on the right.  If you get to this area and get confused ask for Casa Dorado or “la casa de Roberto."
